Starting A Rewarding Fashion Designer Career For Your Future

June 8th, 2010 Comments off

If you’re looking to apply your creativity to a fashion designer career, then first of all: Good luck! It can be one of the funnest careers to have, but it’s also pretty cut throat in terms of competition. We don’t mean to turn you away from your dreams, but you need to know what you’re in for. Before getting started, you’ll want to arm yourself to the teeth with all the knowledge you can gather regarding the fashion industry.

So here are a few things to keep in mind…

An Education Can Do You Some Good

Creativity is fine and dandy, but creativity alone doesn’t pay the bills. Sorry, but that’s just how it is. Steven Spielberg doesn’t sit around describing movie ideas and leaving it for other people to figure out. No, he goes in and puts his butt to work developing new special effects techniques, working with the writers and so on. If you want to be a great fashion designer, you won’t get there on your ideas alone. You need to know the technical side, and that’s where a school of design can help you.

Be Open to Different Opportunities

If you’re one in a thousand, you might just start the next big fashion company and have your stuff being strutted on runways by the likes of Tyra Banks. If you’re anything like everyone else, you’re going to have to figure out some more practical ways to pay the bills. Don’t be so proud as to turn your nose up at a good opportunity. Let’s say you wind up getting hired to design costumes for an indie film or a rock band, or you land a job designing suits for a department store. Hey, it’s work, and it’s work in your chosen field. Don’t be a snob.

Something Familiar, Something Novel

People don’t want ideas that are TOO wild. If you want to carve your niche in the fashion world, don’t be doing crazy silly stuff like making hats out of balloons and tin cans, and then telling people they need to wear these hats as shoes. You’re not Salvador Dali. What people want is good, functional clothes that happen to look a little different than anything else they’ve ever seen before.

Be Practical

As we mentioned above, you need to know a smart opportunity when you see one. Likewise, you need realistic goals. If your dream is to get rich overnight, then sorry, but you’re in the wrong business. What you should be doing is playing the lottery. On the other hand, if you want to make a living doing what you love, there are millions of ways for you to accomplish this. Just be open, be smart, and be deadly, because the competition won’t cut you any slack, either. Like we said, it’s a dog eat dog world out there, so whatever little niche you’ve carved out for yourself, you’d better be the biggest dog in it, or else move on for greener pastures.
